Abstract:
Monthly variation in Gonadosomatic index (GSI) of Cyprinus carpio var. communis in wild and farmed conditions was studied. The GSI values of both male and female fishes were found low from the month of December to February and reached a peak value in May in both the environmental conditions. In case of wild males the minimum and maximum values of GSI were 2.36±0.85 and 11.21±1.22 respectively. In case of farmed males, the minimum value was 1.99±0.74 and maximum value of GSI’s 8.5±2.50. The data reveals that significantly higher male GSI’s was found in the wild than farmed fishes in the month of January (p<0.01), March (p<0.05) and May (p<0.05). Significant difference in female GSI’s between the wild and farmed habitats was found with higher GSI’s in wild than farmed and differences was observed in the month of January (p<0.05), February (p<0.01), March (p<0.01), April (p<0.01), and May (p<0.01).
