Abstract:
This study was carried out to determine the distribution and concentration of heavy metals (Cr and Ni) in roadside soils along the three different traffic routes (National & State Highways; and local route of Hisar district) of Haryana. Soil samples were collected from six locations for each traffic route at four different distances (10m, 50m, 100m and 500m) using Global Positioning System (GPS). For estimating concentration of chromium and nickel, 200 gm of soil was taken in 500 ml capacity plastic container without any addition of heavy metals. The moisture in the soil was maintained at field capacity. The sampling was done at periodical incubation intervals (0, 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60 days after incubation) for the estimation of DTPA-extractable Cr and Ni. The soils of National Highway had higher values of DTPA-extractable heavy metals as compared to soils of State Highway and local route during each period of its incubation. Periodical changes in concentration of heavy metals showed that as the period of incubation increases, a gradual decrease in DTPA-extractable Ni was noticed up to 60 DAI, while the DTPA- extractable Cr were not detectable at 20 to 60 DAI.It is concluded that all heavy metal contents in roadside soils were found within the permissible limits as per WHO, FAO and Indian standards.
