Abstract:
In the present investigation various seedling parameters were analyzed to determine the relative performance of 25 progenies of Bauhinia variegata. Analysis of variance for different seedling characters of important crosses and parents revealed significant variations among full-sibs families. The highest magnitude of PCV was recorded for character number of leaves per plant (29.47%) and collar diameter (22.44%) whereas, the lowest PCV was recorded for internodal length (6.02%). The highest GCV was recorded for number of leaves per plant (26.03%). while, lowest GCV was recorded for internodal length (4.71%) and seedling height (9.00%). The highest heritability estimates were observed for petiole length (81.33%), number of leaves per plant (78.04%), leaf area (72.89%), internodal length (61.32%) and number of branches per plant (53.87%). The higher genetic advance as percentage of mean was observed for number of leaves per plant (47.38%). whereas, lowest genetic advance as percentage of mean was observed for internodal length (7.60%). The high heritability coupled with high genetic advance as percentage mean was recorded for number of leaves per plant. High heritability with moderate genetic advance as percentage of mean was shown for petiole length, leaf area and number of branches per plant indicating the presence of additive gene action in their inheritance, providing rapid genetic improvement through simple selection. The correlation study showed that all the characters were significant and positively correlated to all other characters at genotypic and phenotypic level. Collar diameter showed maximum significant and positive correlation with number of leaves per plant at genotypic levels. Petiole length showed maximum significant and positive phenotypic correlation with number of branches per plant at phenotypic level.
