Abstract:
Morphological characterization of urdbean (Vigna mungo L.) genotypes is essential for their protection under Plant Variety Protection (PVP) legislation because varietal testing of (DUS) Distinctness Uniformity and Stability (DUS) is the basis for granting protection of new varieties under PPV and FRA 2001 (Katiyar et al. 2010) [3]. It gives genotypes a distinct identity and makes it easier for breeders to select superior genotypes based on their morphology. Keeping this in view thirty-three genotypes including four checks were characterized for 21 DUS descriptors (PPV and FRA, 2007). Among the 21 DUS traits observed, four were monomorphic, ten were dimorphic, five were trimorphic, and two were found to be polymorphic, displaying the presence of genetic variability and serving as morphological markers to locate unique parental material for particular features in urdbean genotypes, and can be used for registration with PPV & FRA and seed purity testing.
