Character association correlation and path coefficient analysis in Faba bean (Vicia Faba L.)

Abstract:
The present investigation entitled “Character association correlation and path coefficient analysis in Faba bean (Vicia Faba L.)’’ was conducted at Student’s Instructional Farm of Acharya Narendra Deva University of Agriculture & Technology, Narendra Nagar (Kumarganj), Ayodhya in normal soil under irrigated condition during Rabi 2018-19. The experimental material constituted 44 germplasm lines including four check varieties viz., Vikrant, ET- 218787, ET- 218751, ET- HFB- 1. Seed yield per plant showed highly significant and positive correlation with pods per plant per plant, harvest index and number of seeds per pod, 100-seed weight, harvest index exhibited highly significant. The characters showing significant positive correlation among yield and important characters would be highly effective and efficient in improving respective traits. Path analysis identified harvest index, pods per plant and biological yield per plant as important components having high order of direct effect; and the maximum indirect effects on seed yield per plant was exerted by pods per plant via harvest index; seeds per plant (0.19656), plant height, pods per plant and 100 seed weight via biological yield per plant; harvest index, seeds per pod, biological yield per plant and days to maturity via pods per plant. The characters identified above as important direct and indirect yield components merit due consideration in formulating selection strategy in faba bean for selection of high yielding varieties.
