Abstract:
Background: Shunthi Churna possess Vata-Kapha Shamaka, Deepana, Pachana, Shulaghna and Shothaghna properties whereas Erand Tail also have Vata-Kapha Shamaka and Katu, Tikshna, Ushna properties. Many more work may be carried out on Shunthi Churna and Erand Tail, this study will definitely strengthen the previous one.
Aims: To evaluate pharmacognostical and physico-chemical characters of Shunthi Churna and physico-chemical characters of Erand Tail.
Materials & Methods: Prepared drug was collected from pharmacy I.P.G.T. & R.A. and authenticated in respective Laboratory of I.P.G.T. & R.A., G.A.U., Jamnagar. Standard procedures were followed to undertake the pharmacognostical and physico-chemical analysis.
Results: The Phrmacognostical results of Shunthi Churna showed Cork in Surface View, Groups of Fibers, Oleoresin, Scariform Vessel, Silica deposition and simple starch Grains. Physicochemical analysis of Shunthi Churna revealed Ash value in percentage 6.23%, Loss on drying in percentage 10.89%, Alcohol (Ethanol) soluble extract in percentage 4.24%, Water soluble extract in percentage, 20.136% and PH 7 and that of Erand Tail showed Iodine value 83.12%, Acid value 3.52%, Saponification value 198.12%, Specific value 0.952 and Refractive index 1.49. In HPTLC, Shunthi Churna revealed 05 spots at 254 nm and 06 spots at 366 nm whereas that of Erand Tail 07 spots at 254 nm and 05 spots at 366 nm.
Discussion: Pharmacognostical study helps in exact authentication of drug through its organoleptic characters like taste, odor, color and touch along with microscopical characters. The presence all characters of the both drugs i.e. Shunthi Churna and Erand Tail shows its Genuinity. All the pharmaceutical parameters analyzed showed values permissible for the Churna and Tail.
Conclusion: As there may be many more study on the Shunthi Churna and Erand Tail, The findings of the study will definitely strengthen the previous one.
