An experimental study on the antidote effect of bharjita tankana in gunja (Abrus precatorius) induced toxicity

Abstract:
Prathyoshada is a unique term coined in traditional Kerala visha chikitsa textbooks which can be considered as concept of antidote. Many prathyoshadas are explained for vishadravyas like upavishas. Gunja is one among the upavisha, which is an irritant poison by modern concept. In Kriyakoumudi text bharjita tankana mentioned as an antidote for Gunja seed poisoning. To evaluate the antidote effect in Gunja poisoning TED dose of Bharjita tankana is used. biochemical parameters, haematological parameters, histopathological studies were compared. Gunja showed mild to moderate toxicity in liver, which have been reversed by bharjita tankana in TED dose which is suggestive by results of biochemical parameters, and histopathological studies.
