Abstract: Methanol extract of Croton roxburghii Balak root (Euphorbiaceae) was investigated for its antimicrobial activity against four pathogenic bacterial strains (Gram positive: B. subtilis, S. aureus & Gram negative: E. coli, K. pneumoniae) and two fungal strains (S. flavus & C. albicans), in different concentrations (5 μg/ml, 25 μg/ml, 50 μg/ml, 100 μg/ml and 250 μg/ml), following standard procedures. The pathogens were tested by disc diffusion method and antimicrobial activity was graded, based on the zone of inhibition. Results were compared with that of different standards like Streptomycin, Cifpodoxime and Gentamycin, for antibacterial activity while Amphotericin, Fluconazole and Clotrimazole, for antifungal activity. The results revealed that the methanol extract of Croton roxburghii root showed remarkable antibacterial and antifungal activities comparable with that of standard against the organisms tested.
