A Comprehensive review on Parthenium hysterophorus L.: Unveiling the therapeutic potentials and biomedical applications for a healthier society

Abstract:
Parthenium hysterophorus L. is an invasive weed and a blooming species in the Asteraceae family. It is commonly known as Congress Grass or Feverfew. Despite its disadvantages, P. hysterophorus has various therapeutic advantages. Despite its abundant growth and difficult regulation, various novel applications of this controversial herb have been recognised as a technique for weed management. This review aims to compile the multi-faceted pharmacological activities, applications, cell-line research, clinical trials related to P. hysterophorus. The research demonstrates that P. hysterophorus is utilised as a conventional treatment throughout Central America and the Caribbean and Jamaica. It is utilised for the treatment of cutaneous infections, dermatitis, amoebic dysentery, and functions as an analgesic for muscular rheumatism. The extracts obtained from P. hysterophorus demonstrate anti-inflammatory, antifungal, antimicrobial, antioxidant, larvicidal, insecticidal, hypoglycemic, and anticancer activities. The investigations confirmed that P. hysterophorus possesses numerous traditional and biological applications.
