Abstract:
Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) are pivotal in strengthening smallholder farmers' capacities to access markets, resources, and decision-making platforms. However, the participation of women farmers in FPOs remains limited due to structural, socio-cultural, and economic barriers. This paper explores gender dynamics within FPOs, focusing on the challenges faced by women, opportunities they can leverage, and systemic changes required to ensure gender equity. The study uses recent policy developments, case studies, and data from Indian FPOs to highlight key enablers such as leadership roles, skill development initiatives, and gender-responsive policies while addressing barriers like limited resource access and socio-cultural constraints. It concludes with actionable recommendations for fostering gender inclusivity, emphasizing the empowerment of women farmers and sustainable agricultural development.
