Organic farming for sustainable agriculture: An overview

Author(s):
Prem Sai V and Sowmya N
Abstract:
Organic farming is a sustainable agricultural system that uses methods and substances to maintain the integrity of organic products. It offers a more environmentally friendly alternative to conventional farming, reducing the risk of environmental harm, improving soil fertility, and enhancing biodiversity. Although organic farming typically results in lower crop yields, its environmental benefits may outweigh this trade-off when considering the overall impact per product unit. In contrast, conventional farming, which relies on pesticides and fertilizers, contributes to soil degradation, water pollution, and health issues. Organic farming is recognized as a key method to avoid the negative effects of chemical-intensive agriculture and has the potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, combining organic and conventional farming methods could boost agricultural productivity while supporting sustainable practices and food security.
