Abstract:

Medicinal plants are of great important as they possess medicinal properties which are derived from bioactive substances present in plants. Medicinal plants are the sources of different types of bioactive compounds used in pharmaceutical industries. The present study is to identify the various bioactive constituents present in the unexplored plant Engelhardtia spicata Lechen ex Blume gas chromatography- mass spectrometric (GC-MS) method. The leaves of Engelhardtia spicata Lechen ex Blume was extracted with ethyl acetate for 6 days at room temperature. The concentrated extract was subjected to the GCMS analysis for the detection of various phytochemical constituents. In GC-MS study, the present of sixty- four (64) phytochemical constituents were determined showed 64 peaks with 64 compounds in the chromatograph. The identified major constituents were Dioctly phthalate (60.06 %), Gamma- sitosterol (11.87 %), Stigmast-4-en-3-one (6.32), Hexadecanoic acid (5.34 %) and Heptadecene-(8)- carbonic acid-1 (2.88%) respectively. Presence of many photochemical constituents in Engelhardtia spicata Lechen ex Blume bark reaffirmed its medicinal properties. Thus, this plant could serve as a potential source in the development of therapeutic drugs
