Diagnosis and therapeutic management of Babesia gibsoni infection in dog using antimalarial drug therapy

Abstract:
A 3-year-old male Labrador with a history of anorexia, pyrexia, lethargy and blackish faeces for four days was presented At the Veterinary Clinical Complex, PGIVAS, Akola. Upon clinical examination, the conjunctival mucous membrane was pale. High fever (104 °F), high respiratory rate (40/min), Capillary refill time (< 2 sec). Blood smear and PCR examination was found positive for Babesia gibsoni infection. Haematological investigation revealed low Hb, PCV, TEC, platelate count, indicated anaemia and thrombocytopenia. Biochemical investigation revealed increase ALT, AST. The dog was treated with Tab. Artesunate (12.5 mg/kg PO OID) and Tab. Azithromycin (10 mg/kg PO OID) for 10 days along with supportive therapy including hematinic and liver tonic. The dog showed uneventful recovery after 2 weeks post-treatment with improvement in hemato-biochemical parameter.
