Exploring the richness and medicinal marvels of Rheum palmatum: A comprehensive review

Abstract:
Healing with medicinal plants has been practiced since prehistoric times. The continued search for eternal health, longevity, and remedies to relieve pain and discomfort has driven researchers to explore the field of phytochemistry. Rheum palmatum, commonly known as Chinese rhubarb, has been a prominent herb in traditional medicine systems for centuries, with a rich history of therapeutic applications. The present review provides a comprehensive overview of Rheum palmatum, encompassing its botanical characteristics, phytochemical composition, traditional uses, and pharmacological properties. This plant is native to Asia and is extensively grown for its therapeutic qualities. Numerous bioactive substances, including anthraquinones like rhein, emodin, and aloe-emodin, have been identified by phytochemical research on Rheum palmatum and are thought to be responsible for the plant's wide range of pharmacological activities. This review gathers and evaluates the scientific literature currently available on Rheum palmatum to provide researchers, medical professionals, and herbal medicine enthusiasts with a thorough resource. It also emphasizes the necessity of more research studies to comprehend the mechanisms of action and possible medicinal uses of this amazing healing plant. Rheum palmatum's contributions to traditional and modern medicine continue to be of tremendous significance with increased interest in natural therapies.
