Women empowerment through self-help groups in Balod district of Chhattisgarh

Abstract:
This study was conducted with an objective to know about the business performance of women SHG’s in Balod district of Chhattisgarh. Three women SHG’s were selected as respondents for the present study. The selected SHG’s are namely – Jai Maa Laxmi SHG, Maa Shakti SHG and Krishi Mahila SHG. Literacy rate of selected 37 member was 89.1 %, the majority of the respondents in the study area belonged to the age between 31 to 40 years; the majority of the respondents were married.
The Input-Output ratios of Jai Maa Laxmi SHG for various products like- Turmeric powder, Chilli powder, Coriander powder were 1:1.27, 1:1.41, 1:1.24 respectively. Similarly, V:C ratios were found to be 0.78, 0.70, 0.80 respectively. The Input-Output ratios of Maa Shakti SHG for various products like- Roha and Tilapia 1:2.38 and 1:2.31 respectively. Similarly, V:C ratios were found to be 0.42, 0.43 respectively. The Input-Output ratios of Krishi Mahila SHG for various products like- Mango pickle, lemon pickle and Amla pickle 1:5.8, 1:1.50 and 1.47 respectively. Similarly, V:C ratios were found to be 0.17, 0.67, 0.68 respectively. Business performance of Maa Shakti was better as compared to other selected SHG's. Overall net profit of Jai Maa Laxmi SHG was Rs. 42380 /year, Maa Shakti SHG was Rs. 260100/year and Krishi Mahila was Rs. 101200/year from the various products. Major constraints in production were inadequate knowledge of business running, inadequate space for production and price fluctuation of raw materials throughout the year. The study recommended improving labelling, packaging materials, quality standards and making brand by social media advertisement. This study recommended to make effective marketing strategies by doing partnership, customer acquisition, getting space in supermarket, airport kiosk, railway station etc.
