Successful management of chronic ulcerated wound in an Asian elephant (Elephas maximus) with antibiogram and health investigation

Abstract:
A 35 years old female Asian elephant (Elephas maximus) belongs to the Sri Sugvaneshwarar temple, Salem District of Tamil Nadu was investigated for routine health check-up. Blood and dung samples, trunk wash, nasal swabs and smears from the ulcerated wound in the right side of the rump region were collected and subjected to examination by staining of blood smears, faecal examination for helminthic infestation. Single intra-dermal tuberculin skin test and polymerase chain reaction technique were performed for tuberculosis. Antimicrobial susceptibility test was performed from pus samples collected from chronic ulcerated wound. Elephant was treated based on the result of antimicrobial susceptibility test and the elephant eventually recovered from the chronic ulcerated wound.
