Abstract:
Chilika lagoon is situated on the east-coast of India. The lagoon is a unique assemblage of marine, brackish and fresh water ecosystem with estuarine character. Mugil cephalus is considered as the most suitable for aquaculture practices due to high growth rate and environmental adaptability coupled with high market demand and taste. The present study was undertaken to analyze the growth co-efficient, natural mortality and fishing mortality of Mugil cephalus in Chilika lagoon. Samples were collected randomly from the lagoon during the period from January, 2023 to December, 2023. The natural mortality, fishing mortality and total mortality were estimated as 1.185/yr, 0.429/yr and 1.614/yr respectively. The M/K was estimated as 2.32 suggesting the reasonability in the study of natural mortality. The value of Z/K indicated that the stock was mortality dominated during the period of sampling.
