Abstract:
A 8 month old Chippiparai dog with complete, transverse, distal overriding open fracture of left radius-ulna was stabilized using Type II linear external skeletal fixator with 2.5 mm transcortical pins followed by the implantation of bio absorbable vancomycin impregnated calcium sulfate beads (STIMULAN RAPID CURE) of 4.8 mm size at the fracture site before closure of the wound. The fixator was connected with Epoxy frame and covered by padded bandage. Post-operatively, wound healing with clinical weight bearing of grade 0 lameness and full functional limb outcome was noticed by 5th week. Healing of fracture site with periosteal and endosteal callus and resorption of the beads was noticed by 5th week. External skeletal fixator was removed by 5th week after the appearance of clinical union and callus formation. By 7th week complete healing noticed and no evidence of the beads was observed. Pre and post-operative microbiological evaluation revealed reduction of the surgical site infection. In conclusion, open fracture of radius-ulna was successfully treated with reduction of surgical site infection postoperatively by using bio absorbable vancomycin impregnated calcium sulfate beads (STIMULAN RAPID CURE).
