Abstract:
A nondescript cow was presented to the surgical ward of Veterinary Clinical Complex with a history of complete anorexia, severe left flank distension, scanty mucoid faeces and sharp decline in milk yield in the past 6 days. Clinical examination revealed congested mucous membrane, dry muzzle with moderate degree of dehydration, normal respiratory rate, rise in rectal temperature and absence of rumen motility. Per rectal revealed hard consistency of rumen occupying entire left quadrant of abdomen. Haematological parameters like TLC and neutrophils were increased suggesting neutrophilic leucocytosis. Whereas haemoglobin, TEC and packed cell volume were decreased and other parameters were normal. Biochemical study revealed increase in SGOT, SGPT and blood urea nitrogen and mild hypoproteinaemia and albuminemia. Other biochemical parameters were normal. Marked histological changes in the ruminal tissue was noticed due to the foreign body impaction in the study. Standard laparo-rumenotomy was performed and retrieved the foreign material about 27kgs. Complete clinical recovery with significant increase in milk production was noticed after two weeks of treatment.
