Abstract:
The study aimed to assess the prevalence of Theileria orientalis in crossbred cattle from Wayanad district of Kerala by microscopy using Giemsa staining technique. The peripheral blood smears were collected from a total of (n=60) animals, comprising adults (n=35) and calves (n=25), following clinical examination. Only six animals exhibited clinical signs, yet T. orientalis was detected in 73.34 percent (44/60) of the samples. The prevalence was 68.57 percent (24/35) in adults and 80 percent (20/25) in calves. Despite the limited clinical signs, the high prevalence of T. orientalis highlights the significant carrier status of the disease in cattle from Wayanad district, suggesting a widespread subclinical infection in the region.
