Abstract:
Among nutrients, nitrogen is the most important nutrient which is an essential element of all amino acids. However, under general fertilizer N recommendations, the high spatial heterogeneity of soil N availability restricts the effective use of N fertilizer. Recent developments suggest that tools like chlorophyll meters, leaf colour charts and Green Seeker offers greater opportunities for making quick decisions on nitrogen management which can assure need-based nutrient management in crop fields. By keeping the above facts in view, a field experiment was conducted on sensor based precision nitrogen management in maize at main agriculture research station, University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad, during kharif 2020 and 2021. The experiment was laid out in strip plot design with sixteen treatment combinations comprised of two horizontal strips (rainfed and irrigated condition) and eight vertical strips [precision nitrogen management practices, viz., N supplementation at 86-90, 91-95 and 96-100% sufficiency index (SI), response index (RI) of 1.11-1.25, 1.26-1.4 and >1.4, RDF and absolute control] replicated thrice. The results of the experiment indicated that growing maize under irrigated condition recorded significantly higher dry matter accumulation (DMA) and growth indices viz., Absolute Growth Rate (AGR) and Crop Growth Rate (CGR) as compared to rainfed condition at all the growth stages. among precision nitrogen management practices, nitrogen application at SI of 96-100% recorded significantly higher DMA and growth indices (AGR and CGR) as compared to other treatments throughout the growth period. Among interactions, growing maize under irrigated condition and nitrogen application at SI of 96-100% recorded significantly higher DMA and growth indices as compared to other treatments at all the stages of the crop growth.
