Abstract:
The present study was carried out to improve the health management practices of the Malpura sheep in Malpura Tehsil of Tonk district, Rajasthan. Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) has started mega project for dissemination of improved germplasm (plants and animals) to the field during XI five year plan. Malpura sheep unit was inducted in the mega sheep seed platform since March 2014 A total of 63 farmers from 23 villages have been recorded during the year 2020 in the field unit of MSSP. The village was categorized into three centers: center-1, center-2, and center-3. The 21 farmers from center-1, 28 from center-2, and 14 from center-3 were selected based on the information collected during the survey. A total of 11552 vaccinations, 7839 de-wormings, and 19783 treatments were carried out during the period. The routine vaccination schedule was performed against Peste des petits ruminants (PPR), enterotoxaemia (ET), and small pox. The animals covered under routine vaccination had the highest vaccination percentage in center-2 (36.87%), followed by center-1 (34.24%), and center-3 (27.87%). The de-worming rate in sheep flock was highest in center-1 and Center-2 (35.45%, each), followed by center-3 (29.08%). The incidence of diseases, i.e., general systemic states, digestive disorders, integumentary diseases, reproductive disorders, respiratory diseases, and other diseases observed during this period in 23 villages, were 42.29%, 41.78%, 9.78%, 0.91%, 1.78%, and 3.42%. Abortions in sheep due to vitamin E and selenium deficiency were among the challenges farmers faced in 2020. It is concluded that animal healthcare facilities in the district need to be augmented further, with a focus on appraising the sheep farming community about the benefits of disease preventive measures, including regular de-worming and vaccination, to promote animal health and increase economic gains.
