Abstract:
Canine pyometra is a common reproductive disorder of intact diestrual bitch, which warrants early recognition, diagnosis and appropriate treatment to avoid any disastrous consequences. Despite the latest treatment strategies, the mortality rate due to pyometra is about 4%. A total of thirty-six bitches of different breeds with the age between one to ten years which were brought to the small animal Gynaecology and Obstetrics Unit, Madras Veterinary College Hospital with known breeding history and with open type pyometra were selected for the study. The incidence of pyometra in bitches varied from one year to ten years with a mean age of 5.5 years. No apparent breed predisposition was observed. The increased incidence of pyometra in the spitz breed of dogs may be because this breed is more popular among pet owners.
