Abstract:
The study was carried out among 120 dairy cooperative members from 3 districts of Tripura, 40 from each district to know about the socio-economic profile as well as various management practices. Categorization was done according to herd size using mean and standard deviation method which resulted into small herd (<3), medium herd (3 to 8) and large herd (>8) farmers. Using a pre-tested interview schedule, data was collected. It was found that majority of the farmers (86.67%) were having marginal (<1 ha) land holding. Overall majority of the farmers (33.33%) were having education up to middle school. The overall average herd size of all the farmers was found to be 5.27±0.26 animals. It was observed that deworming and vaccination of adult animals was followed by overall 65.83% and 44.16% of the farmers respectively, whereas treatment of sick animals was done by private practitioner (87.5%). Knuckling was the major milking method (87.5%) followed by most of the farmers, while none followed machine milking. Drying off was practiced by almost all the farmers (93.33%). Majority of the farmers (75.83%) fed colostrum within two hours of birth to the calves, while majority (71.67%) fed colostrum only to one quarter of the udder to the calf. Also it was found that almost all the farmers (99.17%) dewormed their calves between 1 to 2 months of age and none followed dehorning.
