Abstract:
The present work was conducted to study the histoarchitectural and histochemical characteristics of oesophagus in six adult local dogs of both the sex. The lamina epithelialis consisted of lightly cornified stratified squamous epithelium. The average thickness of the epithelium of the oesophagus was more in the thoracic region and less in cardia region. The lamina muscularis mucosae of the pharyngoesophageal and cervical parts of the esophagus appeared as scattered and interrupted bundles of smooth muscle, while that of the thoracic part, abdominal regions showed a continuous layer except at the passage of the excretory ducts of the glands. The oesophageal glands were compound, tubuloalveolar and mucoserous consisted of the predominated mucous alveoli, little serous acini and serous demilunes. The mean thickness of tunica muscularis was more in the thoracic region. The tunica muscularis consisted of skeletal muscle in the pharyngoesophageal, cervical and thoracic regions and in abdominal region of the oesophagus tunica muscularis showed amalgamation of skeletal and smooth muscle fibres. The pharyngoesophageal and cervical region of esophagus was covered by adventitia and that of the thoracic and cardia region was covered by serosa. The oesophageal glands showed strong staining with Alcian blue (pH2.5)-PAS stain representing presence of acid mucopolysaccharides.
