Abstract:
This study investigated the efficacy of edible coatings in extending the shelf life of sapota fruit, a highly perishable commodity. Sapota fruits were treated with varying concentrations of Aloe vera gel (25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%) and bee wax (25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%), with a control group included. Treated fruits were stored at 5±2 ºC, and physico-chemical characteristics were analyzed at 4-day intervals over a 28-day period. Results demonstrated that 100% bee wax coating significantly prolonged shelf life, reducing spoilage up to 28 days of storage. Additionally, this treatment (100% bee wax) was effective in maintaining fruit firmness and minimizing physiological weight loss. The findings suggest that bee wax coating, particularly at 100% concentration, is a promising post-harvest treatment to extend the storage life and preserve the quality of sapota fruit.
