Abstract:
The present investigations on ajwain was conducted during kharif and rabi 2018-19 at Spice Unit, MARS, UAS, Dharwad to study the Response of ajwain (Trachyspermum ammi L.) cultivars to different dates of sowing. The experiment was laid out in Strip plot design with three replications. The treatment consisted of five sowing dates (July, August, September, October and November) and three varieties (AA-1, AA-2 and Lam Sel-1). The yield of a crop is mainly influenced by environmental and genetic factors. Performance of varieties is better only when optimum favourable conditions are provided. In the present investigation, an attempt was made to find out superior ajwain genotypes and suitable sowing date under northern transitional tract of Karnataka. The results revealed that among different dates of sowing, crop sown during the month of July recorded the highest yield of 6.24 q ha -1 which was on par with August sown crop in terms of yield (6.02 q ha-1). The highest number of branches (14.44) and umbels per plant (208.42) was recorded in July sown crop. Among the varieties, AA-1 recorded the highest yield (4.88 q ha-1) and it was on par with Lam Sel-1 (4.64 q ha-1). The highest number of branches (11.41) and umbels per plant (167.52) was recorded in AA-1. Among the interactions of date of sowing and varieties, the highest yield was recorded in July sown with AA-1 (7.24 q ha-1).
