Abstract:
The present investigation was undertaken to estimate the genetic variability, heritability and genetic advance for growth, yield and quality parameters among 30 genotypes of potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) in a randomized block design with four replications during kharif 2018 under AICRP (Potato), Department of Horticulture, MARS, UAS, Dharwad, Karnataka. Analysis of variance revealed highly significant differences among the genotypes was observed for all the growth, yield and quality parameters. For all the characteristics observed, phenotypic coefficients of variation were higher than genotypic coefficients of variation. The phenotypic coefficients of variation (PCV) and genotypic coefficients of variation (GCV) were greater for unmarketable yield per hectare followed by marketable yield per hectare, total yield per hectare, number of tubers per plant, chips colour score and weight of tubers per plant. It indicated the existence of sufficient variability among the genotypes. High heritability estimates coupled with high genetic advance were reported for total yield per hectare, number of tubers per plant and marketable yield per hectare showing that simple selection would be helpful for the improving these characters, as they are governed by action of additive genes and can be utilized for further crop improvement programme.
