Abstract:
The study assessed the food consumption pattern among rural and urban diabetic subjects in Fatehabad district, Haryana. Two hundred subjects (40-60 years of age); who were suffering from non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) for 6 months or above were assessed for their food consumption pattern. It was observed that the consumption of traditional sweets was higher among the rural subjects while the consumption of bakery products, fried foods was higher among urban subjects. The consumption of sprouted grains, fruits and vegetables were low among both rural and urban subjects. Therefore, diabetes subjects should be counseled to adopt healthy eating habits and encourage them to improve their diets in order to prevent diabetes and its complications.
