Abstract:
Intercropping, or growing two or more crops together on the same land, has long been practiced by farmers but it’s now being recognized as a smart and sustainable way to make better use of natural resources. In the case of perennial orchards, the wide spaces between fruit trees often sit unused. That space holds great potential. By planting short-duration vegetables in between, farmers can significantly boost land productivity, improve soil health, and add an extra source of income. This approach is especially important today, as farmers face increasing pressure from shrinking land availability, changing climate patterns, and the need to adopt more diverse and resilient farming systems. Intercropping vegetables in orchards offers a range of benefits from more efficient use of water and nutrients to natural pest control and greater biodiversity. It also provides steady income during the off-season when fruit trees are not bearing produce something that can be crucial for small and marginal farmers.. It covers key areas such as crop selection, ecological interactions, productivity outcomes, and economic feasibility. It also highlights success stories from different regions and discusses the practical challenges and technological solutions available today. This paper emphasizes how vegetable intercropping in orchards can help build productive, balanced, and climate-resilient agroecosystems making farming both more profitable and more sustainable for the future.
