Knowledge regarding prevention of parent-to-child transmission of HIV among antenatal mothers attending OPD

Abstract:
“A study to assess the knowledge regarding prevention of parent-to-child transmission of HIV among antenatal mothers attending OPD in selected hospitals of Pune city” The study was carried out by 4th year BSC Nursing students of Bharati Vidyapeeth College of Nursing Pune.
Purpose: The purpose of the study was to assess the knowledge regarding prevention of parent-to-child transmission of HIV among antenatal mothers.
Material and method: A non-experimental descriptive study was conducted, enrolling 100 antenatal mothers available at the time of data collection. Non probability purposive sampling technique was adopted. A structured questionnaire was developed for data collection which composed of 15 questions regarding prevention of parent to child transmission of HIV. Analysis was done using frequency percentage to describe the Sample Characteristics & to categorize knowledge and fisher exact test was used to determine association between knowledge and selected demographic variables.
Result: Distribution of frequency and percentage according to the demographic variables. Findings show that majority 41% (41) were in the age group of 26 to 30 with the education 46 % (46) graduation / post-graduation, and Occupation 83%(83) were house wife with 100% (100) multi gravida. This section deals with the frequency distribution of subjects according to assess the knowledge regarding prevention of parent to child transmission of HIV among antenatal mothers. Section Shows that majority 63% antenatal mothers were having good knowledge with mean score of 11.49 and SD 2.01.
Association of Knowledge regarding prevention of parent to child transmission of hiv among antenatal mothers with the selected demographic variables. There is no any association between knowledge score and demographic variables except occupation. At 0.05 level of significance.
Conclusion: The purpose of the study was to assess the knowledge regarding prevention of parent-to-child transmission of HIV among antenatal mothers. The demographic variable and knowledge regarding prevention of parent-to-child transmission of HIV among antenatal mothers are not significantly associated.
