Abstract:
The present study was conducted to assess the acute toxicity of the aqueous extract of roasted and ground beans of Coffea canephora robusta (aergbCcr) in the rats. The HPLC study of caffeine in the aqueous extract showed a proportion of 7.5%. The evaluation of acute toxicity was done according to the guidelines of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) 423 for testing chemicals. This study showed that the lethal dose 50 (LD₅₀) of this extract would be between 2000 and 5000 mg/kg of body weight (b.w). The relative weights of organs (kidneys, liver and heart) taken from rats at the end of the experiment did not change significantly. The biochemical and hematological parameters showed no significant variation. The aqueous extract of roasted and ground beans of Coffea canephora robusta has a relatively low acute toxicity.
